About Hintertux

Hintertux sits at the head of a long valley in the Zillertal Alps, in western Austria. It is best known for the Hintertux Glacier, one of the few glaciers in Austria where skiing is possible in summer as well as winter. The surrounding peaks are rugged and largely untouched by large-scale development, and the village itself is small, quiet and surrounded by alpine pastures and rock.

Clear mornings tend to give the sharpest view of the peaks, while afternoon clouds often build over the high ground. Hintertux is reached by road up the Zillertal valley from Mayrhofen. Summers are mild in the valley but can be cold and windy on the heights, so bring layers even when the valley is warm.
