This live camera looks over the central square of Vallenar, a town in the Huasco Valley of northern Chile. It is a good way to see the daily rhythm of a provincial Chilean town in the desert, with the stream running continuously from the source. Local time, current weather and a short forecast sit alongside the player.
Vallenar sits inland from the Pacific coast, in the Atacama region, at roughly 390 metres above sea level. The Huasco River has long shaped the valley, bringing water to orchards and vineyards in an otherwise arid landscape of dry hills and wide skies. The town is known as a centre for agriculture and as a gateway to the Huasco area and the Atacama Desert beyond. Its central plaza is the traditional meeting point for residents and visitors alike.
The feed shows the town centre from a fixed position, so you can follow traffic, pedestrians and the light changing over the square. Activity tends to pick up in the late afternoon and early evening, when people gather after work, and the low sun makes the surrounding hills especially clear. Conditions depend on the view and the time, so you may see quiet midday scenes, passing vehicles or the square in use for local gatherings.
Vallenar has a dry, sunny climate with very little rain, and days can be hot even outside summer, while nights are noticeably cooler. Spring and autumn are usually the most comfortable seasons to visit. The nearby La Serena and Coquimbo are both within roughly 160 kilometres and have their own live cameras on VizCams, including the Plage de Poisson in La Serena and Jaguelito.
