This live camera looks out over a section of the Great Wall of China at Mutianyu, north of Beijing. It is useful for checking how the wall and the surrounding mountains look right now before you set out. The page also shows local time and a three-day forecast for the area.
Mutianyu lies in the mountains of Huairou district, about 70 kilometres northeast of central Beijing. The wall here was built during the Ming dynasty and is known for its restored watchtowers, steep sections and wooded hillsides. The landscape changes noticeably with the seasons, from green summers to bare, clear winter ridgelines.
The view is tied to the wall and its surrounding mountains, so the most interesting moments tend to be clear mornings, when the ridges are sharp, and the autumn months, when the hillsides turn colour. Haze and cloud can hide the far towers, so the live picture is the best guide. Weather and visibility are the main things to watch, and you may see crowds only at peak daytime hours.
Spring and autumn generally offer the most comfortable temperatures and clearest skies, while summer is hot and humid and winter is cold and dry. Mutianyu is usually reached by road or bus from Beijing, and the cable car and toboggan options help with the climb. Nearby, the Great Wall at Juyongguan and central Beijing are other places you may want to see on the same trip.
