Oulu - Skyline - Aurora Borealis
๐ซ๐ฎ North Ostrobothnia ยท Finland โ Altitude 10 m
This live camera looks out over the Oulu skyline in northern Finland, a city close to the Gulf of Bothnia and well north of the Arctic Circle line. It is a useful window for anyone curious about the sky above the city, especially when the aurora borealis may be active. The stream is provided by its owner on YouTube.
Oulu is a university and technology city at the mouth of the Oulu River, on the flat coast of the Gulf of Bothnia. The land around it is low and lake-dotted, with forests and open sky stretching to the horizon. Its northern position means long winter nights and very long summer days, which shape much of local life. The city is also known as a centre of northern Finnish research and innovation.
Because the view is a skyline and sky feed, the most interesting moments depend on the weather and the season. Clear winter nights are the best time to look for the aurora, when activity is strong and the sky is dark. In summer the light lasts late into the evening, and the scene changes slowly through the day. Cloud, snow and haze can hide the sky, so check the live weather block on this page before you watch.
Winters are cold and snowy, while summers are mild and pleasant, so the best months for aurora watching are roughly September to March. Oulu is easy to reach by air and rail from Helsinki. Nearby on VizCams you can also find the Nallikari zipline camera, about 3 km away, and views from Marjaniemi and Raahe farther along the coast.
