This live stream looks out from La Rhune, one of the best-known summits of the French Basque Country, at about 879 metres above sea level. People often check it before walking up or to see whether the mountain is clear of cloud. The page also shows the local time and the weather for the peak.
La Rhune rises above the village of Sare in the foothills of the western Pyrenees, close to the Spanish border. It is famous for its rounded grassy summit, its panoramic views over the Bay of Biscay and the surrounding Basque hills, and for the small mountain railway that carries visitors to the top. The landscape changes quickly with altitude, moving from wooded slopes to open pasture and bare rock near the crest, and the sea is often visible on clear days.
Because the summit is exposed, the view is strongly affected by cloud, mist and wind, so conditions can shift within minutes. Mornings are often calmer and clearer, while afternoons may bring cloud building over the hills. Watching the stream on a sunny day is a good way to judge visibility before a visit, and sunrise or sunset can light the surrounding ridges in warm tones, depending on the weather.
The mountain has a mild, wet Atlantic climate, with the most settled weather usually found from late spring to early autumn. Temperatures at the summit are noticeably lower than in the valleys, so bring warm and windproof clothing even in summer. Other cameras in the area include Itxassou, the Hondarribia beach and the Playa de la Concha in San Sebastian, which give you a sense of conditions on the coast.
