This live camera looks out over the Vieux Port, the historic harbour at the heart of Marseille on France's Mediterranean coast. It is a useful way to see how the port is busy and what the sea and sky look like before you plan a walk along the quays.

The Old Port and its setting

Marseille was founded by Greek sailors around 600 BC, and the Vieux Port has been its working centre for most of that time. The harbour sits in a narrow inlet between the old districts of Le Panier and the Canebière avenue. Sailing boats, ferries and fishing vessels share the water, and cafés line the quays. The city is known for its bouillabaisse, its markets and its mix of cultures from across the Mediterranean.

What the camera shows and when

The stream is a port view, so the main things to watch are boat traffic, the movement of ferries and the state of the water. Daytime gives the clearest light and the most activity. Mornings often feel calmer, while late afternoon and early evening bring warm colours over the harbour. Wind from the north, the mistral, can make the water choppy and is worth noticing when you check conditions.

Climate and getting around

Marseille has hot, dry summers and mild, fairly wet winters, with around three hundred sunny days a year. Spring and autumn are often the most comfortable months for walking. The Old Port is easy to reach on foot from the city centre and from the Vieux-Port metro station. Nearby cameras on VizCams include the A50, A7 and Panorama views around the city, which give different angles on the surrounding area.
