Gersfeld - Wasserkuppe
🇩🇪 Hesse · Germany
This live camera looks out from the Wasserkuppe, the highest peak of the Rhön mountains in Hesse. It is a quick way to see how open the upland looks right now. Watch it before a drive up to judge visibility and wind.
The Wasserkuppe is a broad, mostly treeless summit of the Rhön, rising above the small town of Gersfeld in central Germany. The hills around it are known for rolling grassland, gliding and a long tradition of aviation, which has shaped the mountain since the early twentieth century. The atmosphere is open and windy, very different from the forested valleys below.
Because the summit is exposed, the view changes quickly with cloud, fog and wind. Clear mornings often give the widest views across the surrounding hills, while late afternoon light brings out the textures of the grass. Depending on the view, you may also see gliders or other aircraft during flying weather, so check the stream at different times of day.
The Rhön has a cool, changeable climate, and the summit is often colder and windier than the valleys, even in summer. Spring and early autumn are usually calm and pleasant for walking. Other cameras in the region include Sandberg, about 18 km away, Dermbach and Riedenberg, both around 21 km away.
