Windmessmast - Garzweiler - Jüchen
🇩🇪 North Rhine-Westphalia · Germany — Altitude 90 m
This live camera looks out from a wind measuring mast on the edge of the Garzweiler open-cast lignite area near Jüchen in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is useful for anyone wanting to see the open Lower Rhine plain and the sky conditions there before heading out.
Jüchen lies in the flat Lower Rhine lowland west of Cologne, a region shaped for centuries by farming, river meadows and, more recently, large open-cast lignite mines. Garzweiler is one of the biggest of these pits, and the landscape around it is being reshaped as mining and land restoration proceed. The terrain is almost entirely level, so the horizon and the weather tend to dominate what the eye sees.
Because the view is wide and open, changes in cloud, haze, rain fronts and fog are easy to follow. Low-angle light in the early morning and late afternoon brings out the texture of the fields, while autumn and winter often bring mist over the lowlands. Depending on the view, you may also notice farm buildings, power infrastructure and the movement of machinery at the mine.
The region has a mild, changeable maritime-influenced climate, with rain spread through the year and warm, bright spells in summer. Late spring and early autumn are generally the most comfortable times to visit. Düsseldorf and Cologne are the nearest large cities, and the nearby Hückelhoven and Monheim am Rhein cameras show other parts of the region.
