This live camera looks out over the Ockholm area near Schlüttsiel, a small port village on the Wadden Sea side of Schleswig-Holstein. Check the current light, tide and sky before deciding whether a walk along the dike is worth it.
Ockholm is a small village in the Nordfriesland district of Schleswig-Holstein, close to the German-Danish border. Schlüttsiel is known as the ferry point for the North Frisian island of Pellworm and the Hallig islands further out. The landscape is flat, with marshland, dikes and open skies, and the wind and tides shape daily life here. The Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage area, lies just offshore.
Depending on the view, the camera may show water, boats, the dike and the changing light over the flat coast. Tide levels change the scene a great deal, so low water reveals mudflats while high water fills the channels. Mornings and evenings tend to bring the most dramatic light, and clear weather usually gives the widest view across the marsh.
The North Sea coast is mild but windy, with cool summers and wet, blustery autumns and winters. Late spring and early autumn are often the most pleasant for walking the dike. Nearby, Wyk auf Föhr, Sylt and St. Peter-Ording are all within roughly an hour's drive, and the ferry connections make Schlüttsiel a useful base for island trips.
