This camera looks out over the small alpine village of Argentera in Piedmont, at about 1,652 metres above sea level. It is a good choice for checking mountain conditions, snow and cloud before heading into the Maritime Alps. The live player is embedded below, with the local time and forecast beside it.
Argentera sits in the upper Stura valley in the province of Cuneo, close to the French border. It is a traditional mountain settlement surrounded by high peaks, forests and meadows, and it is known mainly as a base for walking, ski touring and quiet valley holidays. The landscape changes sharply with altitude, from larch woods on the lower slopes to rocky ridges higher up, which gives the area its distinctive character.
Because this is a mountain view, the most useful thing to watch is the sky and the snow line. Clear mornings often give the sharpest visibility over the valley, while afternoon clouds can build quickly over the peaks. In winter the view shows how much snow has settled, and in spring and autumn you can follow changes in the colour of the slopes. Expect conditions to shift during the day, depending on the weather.
Summer is the main season for hiking, with the most stable weather usually from late June to September. Winter brings snow and cold temperatures, and roads at this altitude can be affected by ice, so check conditions before travelling. Nearby cameras at Pietraporzo, Chiappi, Vinadio and Isola 2000 offer other views along the valleys and are useful for comparing conditions across the area.
