This live camera looks out over Aira, a small town on the Kagoshima coast of southern Kyushu. It is a good way to check conditions on this side of Kagoshima Bay before you travel or simply to see how the day is unfolding. The page also shows the local time and a three-day forecast.
Aira sits on the eastern shore of Kagoshima Bay, facing the active volcano Sakurajima across the water. The town is part of Kagoshima Prefecture in the south of Kyushu, an area shaped by volcanic soil, warm seas and a long history of hot springs and farming. The landscape is one of gentle hills, coastline and the striking silhouette of the volcano on the horizon.
Depending on the view, you may see the bay, passing ferries and boats, and the volcano when skies are clear. Morning and late afternoon often bring the best light on the water and the mountain. Ash plumes from Sakurajima change with the wind, so the picture can look quite different from one hour to the next. Rain or haze can hide the volcano completely.
Kagoshima has a humid subtropical climate, with hot and wet summers and mild winters. Spring and autumn are generally the most comfortable seasons for visiting. Nearby live cameras include Sakurajima at about 13 km, the Kagoshima view of Sakurajima at about 18 km, and Tarumizu - Sakurajima at about 28 km, which are useful for comparing the volcano from other angles.
