About the square and the city

Bishkek sits on a broad plain at the northern foot of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too range, at roughly 800 metres above sea level. Ala-Too Square is the city's main ceremonial and public space, bordered by government buildings and framed by the mountains on clear days. The city is known as a gateway to the Tian Shan mountains and to the lakes and valleys of the country, and its centre blends Soviet-era architecture with newer buildings and tree-lined boulevards.
