This live camera looks out over Mahebourg, a fishing town on the southeast coast of Mauritius. It is a useful window onto the lagoon side of the island, where the sea is often calmer than on the open ocean. Check it before you plan a trip or simply to see the water and sky as they are right now.
Mahebourg sits on the edge of a wide lagoon in the Grand Port District, close to the airport and the coral reef that shelters much of the south-east coast. The town is known for its fishing harbour, its colonial-era waterfront and the Naval Museum nearby, which recalls the 1810 naval battle fought offshore. Its atmosphere is quieter and more local than the resort areas of the west coast, with markets and small cafés near the water.
The view is of the beach and bay, so the most useful things to follow are the state of the sea, cloud cover and how the light changes through the day. Mornings often bring the calmest water, while the late afternoon can be warm and golden. Because the lagoon is partly enclosed by reef, the surface can look very different from one hour to the next depending on the wind and tide.
Mauritius has a tropical climate with a warm, wetter summer from November to April and a cooler, drier winter from May to October, which is generally the most comfortable time for beach visits. Mahebourg is about an hour by road from Port Louis and is a short drive from the airport. For another view of the island, the Flic en Flac camera on the west coast shows a very different shoreline.
