This camera looks out over Volendam, the fishing village on the shore of the IJsselmeer in North Holland. It is a quick way to see the water, the boats and the village mood before you plan a visit or a day trip from Amsterdam.
Volendam sits on the edge of the former Zuiderzee, now the IJsselmeer, a freshwater lake separated from the North Sea by the Afsluitdijk. It grew from a fishing community and is still known for its harbour, its traditional wooden houses painted in bright colours and its long dike promenade. The surrounding polders are flat, open and green, so the sky and the water usually dominate the view.
The camera is most interesting in the morning and late afternoon, when light falls low over the lake and fishing boats come and go. Wind and cloud change the water quickly, and on clear days the horizon across the IJsselmeer can look very wide. In winter, a frozen or grey lake gives a quieter picture, while summer brings more people and more movement along the quay.
Volendam has a mild maritime climate, with cool summers and wet, windy winters, so layers and a light waterproof are useful whatever the season. The village is about 25 minutes by car from Amsterdam and is easy to explore on foot. Nearby, Monnickendam and Marken are close enough to visit in the same day, and the other cameras on this site show their harbours too.
