Ohakune - Mont Ruapehu
🇳🇿 Manawatū-Whanganui · New Zealand — Altitude 591 m
This live feed looks towards Mount Ruapehu, the largest active volcano in the North Island of New Zealand, from the town of Ohakune. It is useful for checking whether the mountain is clear of cloud before heading up for a day on the snow or a hike on the volcanic slopes.
Ohakune is a small town on the eastern flank of Mount Ruapehu in the Manawatū-Whanganui region. The mountain rises above the Tongariro National Park, which was New Zealand's first national park and holds a UNESCO World Heritage listing for its cultural and natural values. Its volcanic peaks, crater lakes and tussock plateaus give the area a stark, alpine character that is quite different from the country's coastal scenery.
The camera is aimed at the mountain as a whole, so its main value is showing the summit area and the cloud cover around it. Mornings often bring the clearest views before clouds build up over the peaks, which is also the best time to judge snow conditions. In winter the upper slopes are usually white, while in summer the volcanic rock and tussock are more prominent. Expect the view to change quickly with the wind.
Ohakune sits at about 590 metres, so winters are cold and snowy and summers are mild, with weather on the mountain often differing from the town below. The best time for snow sports is generally June to September, while autumn and summer suit walking. Other cameras in the wider area include Foxton Beach and Castlepoint on the coast, and Ohope Beach further north, all a long drive away.
