This live camera looks out over the Royal Albatross Centre at Otakou, on the Otago Peninsula near Dunedin. Royal albatrosses are among the largest flying birds in the world, and the colony here is one of the few places on the mainland where they nest. The stream lets you follow the birds from wherever you are.
Otakou sits at the tip of the Otago Peninsula, a narrow arm of volcanic hills reaching into the Pacific off the east coast of New Zealand's South Island. The area is known for its wildlife, including yellow-eyed penguins, sea lions and fur seals, as well as for its Maori heritage and dramatic coastal cliffs. The landscape changes quickly with the wind and the tide, so the view can feel very different from one hour to the next.
The royal albatrosses breed on the slopes above the bay, and the nesting season brings the most activity. Depending on the time of year, you may see adults taking turns on the nest, chicks being fed, or birds coming in from the open ocean with long, gliding flights. Early morning and late afternoon are often the calmest periods for watching, when the birds are most visible against the sky.
The weather on the peninsula is cool and changeable, with mild summers and wet, windy winters, so layered clothing and waterproofs are worth bringing. The Taiaroa Head camera is the closest stream to this one, and the Moreaki and Wanaka cameras show other parts of the country. Check the live weather block above before heading out to the centre.
