This camera looks toward the bar at the mouth of the Sella river, where Ribadesella's estuary opens onto the Bay of Biscay. It suits anyone curious about the sea state, the tide and the boats moving in and out of the harbour on the Asturian coast.
Ribadesella is a small fishing and holiday town on the coast of Asturias in northern Spain, set where the Sella river reaches the Cantabrian Sea. It is well known in the region for the descent of the river by canoe in August, when thousands of paddlers float down to the town. The surrounding landscape mixes green hills, cliffs and long sandy beaches, and the estuary gives the town its character.
The view centres on the river mouth and its bar, so the water's movement is the main thing to follow. Changes with the tide are easy to notice, and so are the boats coming and going from the harbour. Mornings and calmer days are often the clearest, while the lighting shifts noticeably over the course of the day. Summer brings the most activity on the water, depending on the view at the time.
Asturias has a mild, damp climate with rain possible in every season, so layers and a waterproof jacket are useful for a visit. Late spring and summer are the most popular months for a trip to the coast. From Ribadesella you can reach the nearby cameras at Playa de La Griega and Playa de La Espasa, and the Lastres harbour is also within easy driving distance.
