Montserrat - Refuge Vicenç Barbé, aiguilles des Agulles
🇪🇸 Catalonia · Spain — Altitude 860 m
This camera looks out from a mountain refuge in the Montserrat range, close to the Agulles needles that give the massif its jagged profile. Watch it to see the rock formations and sky above Catalonia's most recognisable mountain landscape before you plan a walk or a visit.
Montserrat is a serrated mountain massif about 50 kilometres north-west of Barcelona, rising to around 860 metres at this point. Its conglomerate pinnacles, many of them named, have shaped the area for millions of years. The Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat sits lower on the mountain and has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries, which is why the range is visited so often by people from across the region.
The title points to the Agulles needles, so the view is likely to be dominated by rock towers, cliffs and open sky rather than buildings. Depending on the angle, you may see changing light on the stone through the day, cloud moving over the summits, or haze drifting in from the lowlands. Clear mornings and the hours before sunset tend to bring out the most texture in the rock.
The Catalan coast and the Montserrat massif have mild winters and warm, fairly dry summers, while the higher ground can be cooler and windier. Spring and autumn are usually the most comfortable times for walking. Barcelona is the nearest large city, and several other cameras in the region, including Mollet del Vallès and Barcelona's Sagrada Família, give a sense of the surroundings.
