Grindelwald - First Schreckfeld
🇨🇭 Bern · Switzerland — Altitude 1970 m
This live camera looks out over the high Alpine terrain above Grindelwald in the Bernese Oberland, at about 1970 metres. It is useful for checking how the mountains look right now, whether cloud is sitting on the peaks, and what conditions are like before a day trip by cable car.
Grindelwald is a village in the canton of Bern, set in a broad valley beneath the Eiger, Mettenberg and Wetterhorn. It is one of the best-known bases for hiking and mountaineering in Switzerland and has long attracted visitors for its glaciers, meadows and wooden chalets. The surrounding peaks often change colour through the day, which makes the valley a favourite subject for photographers.
The title places the camera at the Schreckfeld area on the First side of the valley, so the view is expected to be dominated by high mountain terrain rather than village streets. Depending on the view and visibility, you may see snowfields, rock faces and passing cloud. Clear mornings tend to give the sharpest light on the peaks, while afternoons can bring cloud build-up in summer.
The best time to visit Grindelwald is generally summer for hiking and winter for skiing, with spring and autumn quieter. Weather at altitude can change quickly, so checking the forecast on this page before setting out is sensible. Nearby cameras on VizCams include the First viewpoint, Hôtel Kirchbühl, the Glecksteinhütte westward view and Hôtel Kreuz & Post in the village.
