About Pontresina and the valley

Pontresina is a village in the Upper Engadine, in the canton of Graubünden, at roughly 1,800 metres above sea level. It sits at the foot of the high Bernina range and is known as a base for alpine hiking, ski touring and summer mountain trails. The Morteratsch glacier, one of the best known in the Eastern Alps, lies a short distance up the valley, and the surrounding landscape is wide, open and shaped by glacial history.

What to watch and when

The view is of a mountain setting, so the most rewarding moments tend to be early morning, when the peaks catch the first sun, and late afternoon, when shadows lengthen across the valley floor. Cloud build-up over the summits often appears in the warmer part of the day. Snow cover changes sharply between seasons, so the same view can look very different in winter and in midsummer.

Practical notes and nearby cameras

The Engadine has a dry, sunny climate with cold winters and mild summers, and the best time for hiking is usually July to September. Pontresina is reached by the regional train line to St. Moritz followed by a short bus or local transfer. Nearby live views include the Diavolezza mountain station, the Lagalb station and Muottas Muragl above St. Moritz, which give a broader picture of the area.
