🇨🇭 Valais · Switzerland — Altitude 1608 m
This live camera looks toward the Matterhorn from the car-free alpine village of Zermatt in the Swiss canton of Valais. It is a good way to check whether the famous peak is visible before planning a walk or a train ride up the mountain. The stream is HD and embedded from the owner's source.
Zermatt sits at about 1,600 metres in the Mattertal, a valley closed to ordinary road traffic, so electric taxis, horse-drawn carriages and walking are the norm. The Matterhorn, with its almost pyramid-shaped summit above 4,400 metres, is one of the most recognisable mountains in the Alps and the reason many visitors come. Glaciers, pine forests and steep meadows surround the village on every side.
Depending on the view, the camera may show the peak, the village streets, or the slopes around it. Clear mornings often give the sharpest outline of the summit, while afternoons can bring cloud build-up over the ridges. Changes in light are most striking at sunrise and sunset, when the rock can take on a warm glow. Check the weather block on this page before expecting a clear view.
Summer, from June to September, is the main season for hiking and mountain walks, while winter draws skiers to the large pistes that reach high up the mountains. The Gornergrat and Sunnegga areas are reached by rail and cable car, and the nearby cameras on this page at Sunnegga, Riffelalp and the village hotels give a fuller picture of conditions across the resort.
