This live camera looks north over the seaplane base on Lake Hood, one of the busiest floatplane harbours in the world. It is a useful window onto Anchorage's everyday air traffic and the changing light of the Alaskan sky.
Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska and sits on the Cook Inlet at the foot of the Chugach Mountains. Lake Hood, next to the international airport, is closely tied to bush aviation, because many remote communities in the state can only be reached by air. Floatplanes take off and land on its water in summer, while skis replace floats in winter. The surrounding landscape mixes wetlands, spruce forest and mountain views.
The view is most lively during the summer months, when floatplanes move across the lake through much of the long daylight. Winter brings a quieter scene, often with snow and low sun. Depending on the view and the weather, you may see aircraft taxiing, taking off or moored along the docks. Watching during the early morning or evening can show the low, changeable light typical of high latitudes.
Anchorage has a subarctic climate with cold winters and cool, long summer days. The best time to visit in person is from late May to September. The city has an international airport, and Lake Hood is a short distance from downtown. Nearby cameras on VizCams show the downtown skyline, Cook Inlet and views of Denali, which can be checked before you plan a trip.
