This live stream follows Mendenhall Glacier, a long tongue of ice that flows down from the Juneau Icefield into the valley north of Juneau. It is a good way to check conditions around the glacier and its lake before planning a visit or simply to see how the ice looks today.
Mendenhall Glacier sits in the Tongass National Forest, a short drive from Juneau, the capital of Alaska. It is one of the most visited glaciers in the state and is known for its blue ice, the glacial lake at its foot, and the spruce and hemlock forest that surrounds the valley. The glacier has been retreating over recent decades, which is one reason scientists and visitors follow it closely.
Depending on the view, you may see the ice face, the lake, the surrounding ridges and the sky above them. Clear mornings tend to give the sharpest light on the ice, while cloud and rain are common in this coastal climate and can hide the top of the glacier. Summer, when daylight is long, is the period when the valley is busiest with visitors.
The region has a cool, wet maritime climate, so a waterproof layer is useful at any time of year. Summer is the most comfortable season for hiking and boat trips. Juneau, about 16 km away, has its own cameras, and Angoon, roughly 102 km away, is another camera in the same region worth exploring if you are interested in the wider coastline.
