This live camera looks out over Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim of the canyon in northern Arizona. It is a useful way to check conditions on the rim before you plan a visit, whether you are wondering about light, cloud or snow. The page also gives you the local time and forecast alongside the stream.
Grand Canyon Village sits on the South Rim at roughly 2,088 metres above sea level, in the high plateau country of northern Arizona. The village is the main visitor hub for the national park, with lodges, visitor services and access to many of the rim trails. The canyon itself is one of the most recognised landforms in the world, carved over millions of years by the Colorado River through layers of exposed rock that shift colour with the light.
The view is most striking in the early morning and late afternoon, when low sun brings out the reds, oranges and purples of the rock layers. Depending on the framing, you may see forest of ponderosa pine, the rim edge, or the movement of clouds over the canyon. Weather changes quickly at this altitude, so a sky that looks clear can turn to rain or snow within an hour, and that is worth keeping in mind when you watch.
The South Rim has four distinct seasons, with cold winters that often bring snow and mild, drier spring and autumn weather. Summer afternoons can be warm and are often accompanied by monsoon storms in July and August. Within the village you can walk to several viewpoints, and the free shuttle buses link the rim. Nearby cameras include Snowbowl, Flagstaff, Munds Park and Sedona for comparison of conditions across the region.
