This live camera looks at China Peak, a ski mountain in the Sierra National Forest of central California. The stream lets you judge snow cover, cloud and visibility on the upper slopes before you commit to a drive up the Sierra. Weather and local time for the area are shown on this page.
China Peak sits in the southern Sierra Nevada, at roughly 2,145 metres above sea level, and is part of the Sierra National Forest near the town of Auberry. It is best known as a winter resort with a reliable snowpack, and its tree-covered slopes and granite ridges make it a popular base for skiing and snowshoeing. In summer the mountain is quieter, and the surrounding forest of pines and firs is busy with hikers and campers.
The view is aimed at the mountain itself, so the most useful things to check are snow depth, whether the lifts and runs look open, and how much of the ridge is hidden by cloud. Mornings often give the clearest air, while afternoon clouds can build quickly in winter storms. After a fresh snowfall the slopes look brightest in the early hours of a sunny day. The exact view depends on the camera, so expect conditions rather than fixed landmarks.
Winter brings the heaviest snowfall, with cold nights and sunny but chilly days, and the road up can need chains or snow tyres after storms. Spring is often good for slushy late-season skiing, while summer and early autumn are warm and dry on the lower slopes. Nearby cameras at Lakeshore, Prather and Mammoth Lakes show conditions across the wider Sierra Nevada if you are planning a longer trip.
Current conditions for China Peak are shown in the live weather block on this page, with a three-day forecast. Check it together with the stream, since mountain weather can change within an hour.
