This live camera looks out over Venice Beach on the Pacific coast of Los Angeles. It is useful for checking how the beach looks before you head out, or simply for watching the ocean and the people on the sand. Venice Beach is a neighbourhood on the western edge of Los Angeles, facing the Pacific Ocean. It grew out of a canal-based community founded in the early twentieth century and today is known for its wide sandy shoreline, the Venice Boardwalk and a lively mix of street performers, artists and surfers. The area sits at very low elevation close to sea level, so the ocean is the main feature of the landscape.
The view is of a beach, so the scene changes with the tide, the wind and the time of day. Depending on the angle, you may see waves, surfers, joggers and beach visitors. Mornings are often calmer and clearer, while afternoons usually bring more people. Summer weekends tend to be the busiest period, and the camera is most useful when you want to judge the sea and sky conditions.
Los Angeles has a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild winters. Ocean breezes keep the coast cooler than inland areas, and the marine layer can bring morning cloud, especially in late spring and early summer. Autumn is often the warmest and clearest time to visit. Santa Monica, with its pier and beach, lies a few kilometres to the north and is also covered by live cameras on this site.
