This live camera looks out over the Everglades, the vast subtropical wetland that covers much of southern Florida. It is useful for anyone who wants to see the current conditions in the area before planning a trip or simply to watch the slow rhythm of the water and sky.
The Everglades is a slow-moving river of grass that flows south from Lake Okeechobee toward Florida Bay. Its sawgrass prairies, cypress domes and mangrove edges support alligators, wading birds and many species found nowhere else. Most of the land sits only a few metres above sea level, so water levels and weather shape the scenery more than any hills could. The region is also one of the most important protected ecosystems in the United States.
The camera is most interesting when the light is low, in the early morning or late afternoon, when birds move across the grass and the water takes on colour. During the wet season from roughly May to October, thunderstorms often build over the wetlands in the afternoon and can change the view quickly. The dry season, from about November to April, usually brings clearer skies and lower water, which concentrates wildlife around remaining pools.
The area has a humid subtropical climate with hot, rainy summers and mild, drier winters, so cooler months are generally the most comfortable for visiting. Fort Lauderdale, with its airport and beaches, is the nearest large city and the base for many trips to the park. Several other cameras in the Fort Lauderdale area are listed nearby if you want to compare conditions along the coast.
