This live camera looks out over Sombrero Beach in Marathon, a town in the middle of the Florida Keys. It is a useful window for checking how the water and sky look before you plan a day on the Keys. The stream comes from its owner and is embedded here with a link to the original source.
Marathon sits roughly halfway along the Overseas Highway that links the Florida Keys to the mainland. The town is built around canals, small harbors and low islands, with the Gulf of Mexico on one side and the Atlantic on the other. Sombrero Beach is one of its best-known stretches of sand, sheltered by a shallow reef line that keeps the water calm for much of the year.
Since the view is a beach, the most rewarding times are early morning, when the water is often glassy, and late afternoon, when the light turns warm. Depending on the view, you may see swimmers, boats moving through the channel, and changes in cloud cover that show how the weather is developing. Storm fronts and afternoon showers can change the scene quickly.
The Keys have a subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild, dry winters, which makes winter the most popular season for visitors. Hurricane season runs from June to November, so checking the forecast here before you travel is a sensible habit. Nearby cameras cover Boot Key Harbor, Faro Blanco and the Crane Point Museum, which help you get a wider picture of the area.
