Hiawassee is a small town in the Blue Ridge foothills of north Georgia, close to the North Carolina border. Lake Chatuge is a reservoir on the Hiawassee River, created in the 1940s for hydroelectric power and now used mostly for boating, fishing and quiet lakeside walks. The surrounding country is wooded and hilly, with the Brasstown Bald mountain rising to the south-west.
Depending on the view, you may see open water, shoreline trees and the changing colour of the sky over the lake. Early mornings often bring calm water and mist in the hollows, while late afternoon light tends to be warmest. Autumn is a popular season to watch, when the surrounding hardwoods turn colour, though conditions can change quickly with the weather.
The area has warm, humid summers and mild winters, with the highest rainfall often in the warmer months. Spring and autumn are generally the most comfortable times to visit. Several other cameras in the area, including views of Brasstown Bald and the nearby town of Blairsville, can give you a wider picture of conditions in the mountains.
