This live camera looks out over Gunflint Lake, a quiet body of water on the Canadian border in northern Minnesota. It is useful for checking how the lake looks right now, whether the surface is calm or wind-ruffled, and what the sky is doing above the North Woods.
Gunflint Lake sits in the forested country of the Superior National Forest, close to the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The region is known for its glacier-carved lakes, granite ridges, conifer and birch forests, and a long tradition of canoeing and fishing. At around 488 metres above sea level, the lake lies in a landscape shaped by ice and water, with few roads and a strong sense of quiet.
The view mainly shows open water framed by trees, so changes come from light, wind and weather rather than from busy activity. Early morning often brings mist on the water and calm surfaces, while late afternoon and sunset bring warm colours to the shoreline. Autumn is a striking season here, when the forest turns gold and red, and winter may show ice and snow depending on the year.
Northern Minnesota has a continental climate with warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters, so conditions can change quickly. The best time to visit is usually summer for paddling and early autumn for colour. Nearby cameras include Grand Marais, Tofte, Ely and Silver Bay - Marina, which can help you compare conditions along the North Shore and into the lake country.
