This live camera watches the VIMS CSALT oyster research farm at Wachapreague on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. It is a working research site where tides, water and oyster culture are studied, so the view changes with the tide and the weather. Watch it to see the coastal lagoon conditions in real time.
Wachapreague is a small fishing village on the seaward side of the Delmarva Peninsula, between the Atlantic Ocean and a chain of barrier islands. The surrounding landscape is flat, made of salt marsh, tidal creeks and shallow lagoons. The area has long depended on fishing, clamming and oyster harvesting, and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science operates research facilities here to study shellfish and coastal waters.
The camera is listed as an oyster research farm, so the view most likely covers shellfish culture on the water and the tidal conditions around it. Depending on the view, you may notice water level changes as the tide moves in and out, and differences in light between morning and evening. Sunrise and low tide tend to be the most interesting moments to watch.
The Eastern Shore has a humid subtropical climate with warm, humid summers and mild winters. Late spring through early autumn is the most pleasant time to visit. Wachapreague is reached by road from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel corridor, and nearby cameras on the same coast include Chincoteague and the Virginia Beach fishing pier.
