This live camera looks out over Tofino, a surf town on the wild western edge of Vancouver Island in British Columbia. It is useful for checking conditions on the Pacific coast before deciding whether to head out for a walk, a surf or a storm-watching trip.
Tofino sits on a peninsula facing the open Pacific, with the Clayoquot Sound islands sheltering its harbour. The area is known for old-growth rainforest reaching down to sandy beaches, sea kayaking, whale watching and a strong surf culture. Much of the surrounding land is protected within Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, which gives the coast its quiet, undeveloped character.
The view is most rewarding in the hours around sunrise and sunset, when the light on the water changes quickly. Because the coast is exposed, the sea and sky can shift from calm to rough within an hour, so the stream is a good way to judge swell and cloud cover. Winter brings the largest storm waves and dramatic skies, while summer views are usually clearer and busier.
Tofino has a mild, wet climate influenced by the ocean, with cool winters, mild summers and rain possible in any month, especially from autumn to early spring. Most visitors come between late spring and early autumn. Nearby places on the coast include Ucluelet, about 29 km away, and Bamfield, about 62 km away, both reached by the road that follows the island's west coast.
