This live camera looks out over Sylt, the largest of the North Frisian islands off Germany's North Sea coast. Watch the stream to get a sense of the light, sky and sea conditions before you plan a visit.
Sylt lies at the northern tip of Germany's North Frisian chain, separated from the mainland by the Wadden Sea. It is known for long sandy beaches, dunes, heathland and the traditional fishing villages and harbours on its western and eastern coasts. The island is linked to the mainland by a railway causeway and a road, and its scenery changes noticeably between the tidal flats on one side and the open North Sea on the other.
The view is most rewarding in the hours around sunrise and sunset, when the low light brings out the colour of the sand and water. Tides strongly affect the coastline, so the appearance of the shore can change several times a day. Weather matters a great deal here: clear skies give the sharpest picture, while wind and cloud can quickly alter the mood. The stream shows the current conditions, so check it before a planned walk or outing.
The North Sea climate is mild, with cool summers, moderate winters and frequent wind throughout the year. Late spring and summer are the most popular months for visits, while autumn often brings dramatic skies. Nearby cameras on the Frisian coast, including Wyk auf Föhr and St. Peter-Ording, give a wider picture of the region and its conditions.
