🇮🇸 Western Iceland · Iceland — Altitude 25 m
This live camera looks out over Stykkishólmur, a small harbour town on the north side of the Snæfellsnes peninsula in western Iceland. It is a useful window on the weather and sea conditions here, which change quickly. Check it before you plan a boat trip, a drive along the coast or a walk around the old town.
Stykkishólmur sits on the shore of Breiðafjörður, a wide bay full of small islands. The town is known for its colourful wooden houses, its old harbour and its role as the ferry port for the Westfjords-facing islands of the bay. The landscape is open and low, with the Snæfellsjökull glacier visible on clear days to the southwest. The light on the water can shift from grey to silver within an hour.
Depending on the view, you may see the harbour, moored boats, the water of the bay and the sky over the peninsula. Activity tends to be busiest in the morning and early afternoon, when ferries and fishing boats come and go. In summer the evenings stay light for a long time, so the scene is worth checking late. Winter days are short and the weather can be rough, so expect much of the frame to be dark or obscured by weather.
Iceland has a cool maritime climate, and Stykkishólmur is no exception, with mild but windy summers and cold, wet winters. June to August is the most comfortable period for outdoor activities. Nearby cameras cover Ólafsvík, Rif and Arnarstapi, which give a sense of the wider peninsula. Those places lie roughly 50 to 55 km away along the coast road.
