A former island on the IJsselmeer
Urk sits on the edge of the IJsselmeer, the large freshwater lake created when the Zuiderzee was closed off by the Afsluitdijk in 1932. For centuries it was an island, and its fishing traditions shaped a distinct community with its own dialect and customs. The landscape around it is almost entirely flat reclaimed polder, with wide skies and water on several sides. Much of the village's character comes from its harbour and the narrow streets that climb the small rise it was built on.
