Cape Town - Table Mountain
πΏπ¦ Western Cape Β· South Africa β Altitude 1025 m
This live camera looks at Table Mountain, the flat-topped sandstone massif that rises above Cape Town on the Atlantic side of South Africa. It is a good way to check whether the summit is clear, whether cloud is rolling over the table cloth, or how the light is changing over the city below.
Table Mountain rises to roughly 1,025 metres and forms the backdrop of Cape Town and its harbour. It belongs to Table Mountain National Park, which stretches along the Cape Peninsula and is known for its fynbos vegetation, a dense shrubland found almost nowhere else in the world. The mountain is also famous for the cloud that often pours over its edge, sometimes called the tablecloth, which forms when moist air from the ocean is pushed up and cooled.
The view is taken from the Cape Town area and shows the mountain from the city side. Because the scene depends on daylight and weather, the picture is most readable in the morning and late afternoon, when the rock takes on warm colours. Watching for cloud movement over the summit gives a quick sense of wind direction and whether the cableway and hiking trails are likely to be busy or quiet.
Cape Town has a Mediterranean-type climate with warm, dry summers from about November to March and mild, wetter winters from June to August. The mountain is most often visited in the dry season, but its weather can change within an hour, so conditions on the summit may differ from the city. Nearby cameras cover Camps Bay and Clifton beaches, which are close enough to compare sea and cloud conditions along the coast.
