Melchsee-Frutt - Village
🇨🇭 Obwalden · Switzerland — Altitude 1916 m
This camera looks over the village of Melchsee-Frutt, a small alpine settlement in the canton of Obwalden at about 1,900 metres. It is useful for checking mountain conditions before a walk, a drive up or a day on the lakes.
Melchsee-Frutt sits on a plateau above the Engelberg valley, surrounded by pastures, rocky ridges and a chain of small lakes. It is known mainly as a base for summer hiking and winter snow activities rather than as a town with a centre. The village is reached by a road and a cable car from the valley, which keeps traffic light and the setting quiet and open.
Depending on the view, you may see the village buildings, the surrounding slopes and changing cloud over the peaks. Clear mornings tend to give the sharpest light on the mountains, while afternoon cloud often builds up quickly in summer. In winter the snow cover changes the scene completely, so the camera is a good way to judge how deep it is.
Summers are mild and short, with pleasant daytime temperatures but cool nights, and winters are cold with heavy snowfall. The best time to visit for hiking is usually from late June to September. Nearby cameras cover the Melchsee lake, the Bonistock and the Mägisalp and Käserstatt areas in Hasliberg, so you can compare conditions across the region.
