Mount Spurr - SPCL

This live camera points at Mount Spurr, an active volcano in the Alaska Range west of Anchorage. The stream is run by the Alaska Volcano Observatory, which monitors the peak for signs of eruption. It is useful for anyone who wants to see how the mountain looks right now.
Mount Spurr is a stratovolcano rising to about 3,374 metres in the Aleutian arc region of south-central Alaska. Its last significant eruptions were in 1992, and the volcano remains under close watch because of its proximity to air routes and to the Anchorage area. The surrounding landscape is wild tundra, glaciers and snowfields that stretch across the Alaska Range.
The view focuses on the volcano itself, so changes in snow cover, cloud and steam are the main things to follow. Clear mornings tend to give the best outlines of the summit, while cloud often moves in during the afternoon. Seasonal change is strong here, with snow dominating from autumn through spring and the slopes greener in summer.
Mount Spurr lies in a remote region reached mainly by air or by long road journeys, and conditions can be severe at altitude. The best weather for viewing is typically late spring to early autumn. Nearby cameras include Kenai and several Anchorage views, which show the broader region from lower elevations.
