This live camera looks out over Phoenix, the capital of Arizona set in the Sonoran Desert. It is useful for seeing the sky, light and general conditions across the valley before heading out. The page also shows local time and a three-day forecast so you can judge the heat and weather at a glance.
Phoenix sits in a broad basin of the Sonoran Desert, surrounded by mountain ranges such as the South Mountains and the White Tank Mountains. It is the largest city in Arizona and one of the fastest growing in the United States. The landscape is defined by saguaro cactus, creosote scrub and dry washes, with the Salt River and its canals running through the metropolitan area. Golf courses, resorts and palm-lined streets stand in sharp contrast to the rugged desert edges.
The view is best judged by its title, which names only the city, so it is worth looking at the sky and light rather than expecting particular landmarks. Early morning and late afternoon usually bring softer light and clearer contrast over the desert hills. During the monsoon season from July to September, afternoon clouds and dust storms can change the scene quickly. Sunsets in the dry months often add strong colour to the sky.
Phoenix has a hot desert climate, with summer highs often above 40 Β°C and very little rain. Winter is mild and sunny, which makes October to April the most comfortable time to visit. The city is spread out, so a car is the easiest way to get around. Nearby cameras in the region include Surprise, about 3 km away, and Peoria's Calderwood Butte Trail, roughly 16 km off, for a wider look at the area.
