This live stream looks out from the summit area of the Bear Valley mountain resort in the Sierra Nevada of California, at about 2,590 metres above sea level. It is useful for checking snow, cloud and visibility on the peaks before you travel up the mountain.
Bear Valley is a mountain resort town in Alpine County, in the central Sierra Nevada, not far from the Carson Pass corridor. The area is known for its winter sports, with slopes that draw skiers and snowboarders when the snowpack builds. In summer and autumn the surrounding forests, granite ridges and high meadows attract hikers, and the high country is quiet compared with the larger resorts further north and west.
The camera is a summit view, so the picture is mostly about the mountain sky, ridgelines and weather moving across the range. Conditions change quickly at this altitude, so the best times to watch are early morning, when clouds often sit low, and after a storm, when fresh snow can be seen on the slopes. The stream is worth checking on clear days to judge visibility before heading out.
Winters are cold and snowy, with heavy snowfall common from December to March, while summers are mild and dry, with warm days and cool nights. Roads over the Sierra can close during heavy snow, so check conditions before you travel. Nearby cameras, including Dodge Ridge and the Meyers area, make it easy to compare conditions across the range.
