This live camera looks out over Denver, the capital of Colorado and the largest city in the Rocky Mountain region. The feed is embedded directly from its source, so you can check the skyline, the weather and the light without leaving the page. It is useful before a trip, a drive along the Front Range or simply to see what the mountain air looks like today.
Denver sits on the high plains about 1,635 metres above sea level, just east of the Rocky Mountains. It is nicknamed the Mile High City because its elevation is exactly one mile. The city grew from a gold rush settlement into a centre for energy, technology and outdoor life, and its Lower Downtown, parks and the nearby foothills give it a relaxed, sporty character. Clear skies are common, and the mountains often stand out sharply on the western horizon.
The camera is most rewarding in the early morning and late afternoon, when low sun brings out the detail of the peaks and the downtown towers. Weather changes quickly here. Afternoon storms can build over the mountains in summer, and winter brings snow that may dust the city while the foothills stay white for longer. Watching the sky over the Rockies is a good way to judge conditions before heading out.
Denver has a semi-arid climate with many sunny days, cold winters and warm, dry summers. Spring and early autumn are often the most comfortable seasons for walking and visiting. Because of the altitude, plan for stronger sun and drier air than at sea level. Nearby cameras in Golden, Arvada, Lafayette and Boulder show other points along the Front Range and can help you compare conditions across the region.
