This live camera looks out over Durango, a mountain town in the San Juan range of southwestern Colorado at about 2,285 metres. Watch it to get a sense of the sky, the weather and the mood of the town before you plan a trip or simply to see what the mountains are doing today.
Durango sits in the Animas River valley, surrounded by the peaks of the San Juan Mountains. It grew up around the mining and rail economy of the nineteenth century, and the historic narrow-gauge railway still runs from the town into the mountains. The setting is one of high desert edges, pine forest and sharp alpine ridges, with a small historic downtown at its centre.
The camera is part of the Durango Live Cam source and is embedded here with a link back to its owner. Because it is a mountain-category view, the scene is most likely to change with the sky: clouds building over the ridges in the afternoon, snow on the peaks in winter, and clear early-morning light in summer. Depending on the view, you may see changing light across the valley more than any single landmark.
Summers are warm and dry during the day with cool nights, while winters bring snow and good conditions for skiing at the nearby resorts. Late spring and early autumn are often the most comfortable times to visit. Lake Nighthorse, about 6 km away, and the Purgatory Resort cameras on the mountain are listed below for comparison.
