This live view looks out over Ouray, a small mountain town tucked into a steep canyon in southwestern Colorado. Watch the streamed picture to judge current light, snow cover and cloud, then check the local conditions shown on this page before planning a trip.
Ouray sits at roughly 2,376 metres in the San Juan Mountains, surrounded by high peaks and cliffs that give the town its nickname, the Switzerland of America. It grew from a 19th-century mining settlement and still keeps many of its Victorian brick buildings. The landscape is dramatic, with waterfalls, hot springs and rugged alpine terrain close to the town centre.
The picture is a nature-category view of the Ouray area, so changes in the mountains are what to watch: fresh snow on the peaks, shifting clouds in the canyon, and the colour of the rock at sunrise and sunset. Mornings and late afternoons usually give the clearest light, while summer afternoons often bring thunderstorms that build quickly over the high terrain.
Summers are mild during the day and cool at night, and winters are cold with heavy snowfall that draws skiers to nearby resorts. Late June through September is the most popular period for hiking and the ice park and trails are best seen in the shoulder seasons. Telluride lies about 15 km away, and Durango is roughly 85 km south, both useful for a wider trip.
