This live stream from Sugarloaf, one of the largest ski areas in the eastern United States, lets you check conditions on the mountain before you travel. Use it to see snow cover, weather and daylight at a glance, whether you are planning a ski day or simply curious about Maine's mountains.
Sugarloaf sits in the Carrabassett Valley in western Maine, close to the Appalachian foothills. The resort is known for its long natural snow season, wide trails above the treeline and a vertical drop that is among the largest in the East. The surrounding area is quiet and forested, with lakes and small villages that keep the feel of rural New England.
The camera is most useful in the morning, when fresh snowfall, grooming and the first lift openings are visible. Clear days show the slopes in sharp detail, while storms or low cloud can hide the upper mountain. In autumn and spring the view changes quickly, so the live picture is a good guide to whether the snow is still holding.
Winter from December to March is the main season, with the strongest snow usually in January and February. Temperatures on the mountain often fall well below freezing, so plan warm layers even on sunny days. The nearby Bullwinkle's camera in Carrabassett Valley and the West Forks camera give a wider view of the surrounding valleys.
