Deep Creek Lake is a man-made reservoir on the Youghiogheny River in western Maryland, created in the 1920s for hydroelectric power. Its shoreline of wooded coves and small bays sits among the Allegheny Mountains, and the surrounding Garrett County is known for its forests, lakes and mountain scenery. The area has a quiet, small-town character that draws visitors across the year.
The camera shows the lake from its own vantage point, so the view depends on the season and the weather. Mornings often bring calm water and mist over the surface, while late afternoon light tends to pick out the ridges around the shore. Autumn colours in the surrounding forest are a popular reason to watch, and in winter the lake may show ice along its edges.
Western Maryland has a continental climate with warm summers and cold, snowy winters, and it is noticeably cooler than the coast. Late spring through early autumn is the usual season for boating and swimming, while winter suits skiing in the nearby mountains. Nearby cameras include Cumberland, Morgantown and Westover in the wider region.
