This live camera looks out over West Yellowstone, the small town that serves as the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park. It is useful for seeing the conditions at the gateway before you drive in, whether that is snow, cloud or clear mountain air.
West Yellowstone sits at about 2,030 metres in southwestern Montana, close to the park boundary. It grew up around the tourist trade and is known as a base for exploring Yellowstone, with a Western atmosphere of motels, outfitters and rail heritage. The surrounding country is forested mountain terrain shaped by long winters and short, lively summers.
The view is a fixed feed of the town, so changes come mainly from weather, light and traffic. Mornings often bring clear, crisp air before clouds build over the peaks in the afternoon. In winter the street and rooftops can be heavily snow-covered, while in summer the feed shows busier roads as visitors head toward the park entrance.
Summers are mild and the best season for visiting, roughly June through September, when park roads are open. Winters are cold and snowy, and many visitors come for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Nearby cameras on this site cover the North view of the same hotel, the Clubhouse Inn and the Kelly Inn Grizzly Building, all within a kilometre.
