This live camera points at Old Faithful, the best-known geyser in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Eruptions are famously regular, which makes the stream a practical way to see when the next show is likely to happen. Use the live player, then check the local weather below before planning a visit.
Yellowstone sits largely on a volcanic plateau in northwestern Wyoming, at roughly 2,200 metres above sea level, and extends into Montana and Idaho. It is the oldest national park in the United States, created in 1872, and is known for its geysers, hot springs, mud pots and wildlife such as bison and elk. Old Faithful, named for the regularity of its eruptions, is one of the park's most visited features and sits inside the Upper Geyser Basin.
The camera is aimed at the geyser and its surroundings, so you may see the steam plume rise during an eruption and the crowds gathered on the boardwalks around it. Views depend on weather and visibility, and steam can sometimes obscure the geyser. Eruptions occur at intervals that vary from roughly an hour to more than an hour and a half, so watching for a while gives the best chance to catch one. Cold mornings and winter months often produce the most dramatic steam.
The park is high and the weather can change quickly, with cold nights even in summer and heavy snow from autumn into spring. Summer is the busiest season, when roads and lodging fill up. Nearby cameras cover West Yellowstone and Island Park, which are gateway towns outside the park and useful for checking conditions on the approach roads. Allow time for the drive, since distances inside the park are considerable.
