This live camera looks out over Rockerville, a small community in the Black Hills of western South Dakota. The stream lets you check the mountain conditions before a drive or hike, and watch how light and cloud move across the ridges through the day.
Rockerville sits in the Black Hills, a forested range of granite peaks rising above the Great Plains. The area is best known as a gateway to Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park and the old gold-mining country around Rapid City. Its setting at roughly 1,300 metres gives it cooler nights and a quieter, wooded character than the plains below.
The view is mountainous, so the most useful things to follow are the sky, cloud build-up and the light on the hillsides. Early morning often brings clearer air and softer shadows, while late afternoon in summer can bring fast-forming thunderstorms over the higher ground. Snow and fog are worth watching in autumn and winter, when the forest can look very different from one day to the next.
Summers are warm and pleasant, with cool evenings, while winters are cold and snowy, so check conditions before travelling on mountain roads. Rapid City, the largest city in the region, is a short drive away and offers most services. Other cameras nearby include Pennington County in the Black Hills, the Keystone view toward Mount Rushmore, and two Rapid City feeds.
