This live camera looks out from a high vantage point above Gatlinburg, on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is useful for checking how the mountains look right now, whether cloud or haze is sitting on the ridges, and what the weather is doing before you set out.
Gatlinburg is a small resort town in eastern Tennessee, the main gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, one of the most visited protected areas in the United States. The town sits in a deep valley at the foot of forested ridges, and the surrounding peaks rise to well over 1,500 metres. The area is known for its hiking trails, waterfalls, wildlife and the blue haze that gives the mountains their name.
The view is strongest in the morning, when mist often lifts slowly off the valley floor and the ridges appear layer by layer. Autumn is the most colourful season, when the hardwood forests turn red and gold, and many visitors come for that. Winter can bring snow and clear, sharp views, while summer afternoons often bring cloud build-up and brief showers. Conditions vary, so the live stream is the best guide to what is visible at the moment.
Summers are warm and humid, winters are cool with occasional snow, and spring and autumn are generally the most comfortable times to visit. The town is compact and easy to explore on foot, and the national park is reached by road from the town centre. Nearby on VizCams you can also view the Gatlinburg Skybridge camera, a second Gatlinburg view, and cameras in Bryson City about 31 km away.
