Galveston - Seawall
πΊπΈ Texas Β· United States β Altitude 5 m
This live camera looks along the Galveston Seawall, the concrete barrier that runs beside the Gulf of Mexico on the island's Texas coast. It is a useful way to check how the Gulf looks and what conditions are like before you plan a walk or a drive out to the water.
Galveston is a barrier island off the upper Texas coast, joined to the mainland by causeway. Its history is tied to the port, the Strand district of Victorian commercial buildings and the storm wall built after the devastating 1900 hurricane. The Seawall was raised in the early twentieth century to protect the town, and it now serves as a long promenade where locals and visitors gather. The island is low and flat, so the sea and sky dominate the view.
The camera shows the Seawall and the Gulf beyond it, so the view is mostly open water, sky and the movement of waves and weather. Mornings often offer calmer water and softer light, while late afternoon and evening bring warm colours over the sea. Clouds and approaching storms are easy to follow from this vantage point, and the state of the surf can change quickly, especially in the warmer months when afternoon thunderstorms are common.
Galveston has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Spring and autumn are generally the most comfortable times to be outdoors, though the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November. Nearby cameras include the Historic Center, the Moody Gardens Pyramid, and Crystal Beach, which give a different view of the island. Check the live weather on this page before you go.
